The original party dance!
Salsa is a lively and exciting style of music and dance which typifies popular culture throughout Latin America. It is a fusion of traditional dances and music from Cuba and Puerto Rico with the jazz influence of New York. The Cuban style is still a fusion of these different elements, but has remained closer to its Cuban roots than its more widely spread cousin, Cross Body style.
Although Cuban Salsa has the same timing of footwork as Cross Body Salsa, it has a different feel to it, mainly because partners change positions with each other in a more circular motion, rather than on a line. There are some moves which are similar in both styles, but many which are unique to Cuban style. It is possible to dance Cuban style to any salsa music, but is best suited to dancing with Cuban Salsa music.
Another style of Cuban is called Rueda, and is danced in a circle. A caller calls the moves, and everyone does them at the same time. Some of the moves mean you stay with the partner you started with, and other moves involve changing partners around the circle. It’s great fun, and very sociable.
We now include Cuban Salsa and Rueda classes within our Specials mini courses which run at 7.15pm on Wednesdays. The topics of the Specials classes are not on a regular timetable so please check our upcoming Wednesday 7.15pm classes on our Specials page.
Please note that there is no class for Absolute Beginners for Cuban or Rueda – for the fundamentals of salsa we offer our 6-week salsa courses for Absolute Beginners (level 1) as part of our 8.15pm classes.
Our wonderful teachers give you expert tuition with heaps of fun & lots of friendly encouragement!
There are also Cuban Rueda classes every Saturday with Olga at:

St Johns Road
Beginners: 1.00-2.30pm (must have done at least 8 weeks of Salsa).
